For small business entrepreneurs, the bottom line should not be the only measurement of success, because generating income via our business will never be the only important aspect of our lives. A small business owner who makes boat loads of money, but has little time for their spouse and kids lacks balance and usually true happiness. When starting your business, you should give considerable thought to how much time youre going to have to spend working in your business both in the short term and in the long run once you get the business profitable and running smoothly. Is your business capable of being systematized so others can run it profitably without you? Systematization is a key ingredient for generating residual income and for your business to grow via scalability. It is important that you are clear on whether you want to own a business or a job. It is important to note that owning a job is much more difficult and will require much more of your time because you will have to provide the service or
build the product for your customers while still finding time to run the business.
If you decide that what you really want is a business, then you have to understand that to be a success in running your business, you must possess one key skill set and that is managing skills. Dont make the mistake of so many small business entrepreneurs who thought that because they knew how to sell really well, do hair, clean carpets, tutor kids, etc. that they are sure to be successful in their business and make a lot of money. Dont forget that as the owner, you will also be responsible for doing or overseeing all aspects of the business. This includes the marketing, accounting, customer service, financing, planning, etc. Therefore, if you want a business that generates a profit without you, you will have to be able to not only put a system in place to cover all the bases, but you will also need to be able to manage the system and the people. If you do not have sufficient management skills, you should take a business management course or start studying and reading on your own ASAP.
You may also want to consider talking with other successful small business entrepreneurs because the more experienced owner could really provide you with a great deal of helpful information and some tips that can almost guarantee your small businesses success and longevity.
